Tail

Also called: Tailing

Copying another bettor's or capper's pick.

To tail is to bet the same pick as someone else, usually a capper you follow. "Tailing" a capper means following their picks.

Tailing works best when picks are posted early enough to get the same odds, with the stake in units so followers can size their own bets.

The opposite is to fade.

How it works

Tailing is how most followers use a capper's picks. When a capper posts a bet, followers who tail place the same bet, usually scaled to their own unit size.

A few things decide how well tailing works:

  • Timing. If a capper posts at -110 and the line moves to -125 before you bet, you're getting a worse price than the record shows.
  • Stake sizing. Picks stated in units let you bet your own amount. 1u for you might be $10, for someone else $100.
  • Consistency. Tailing some picks but skipping others means your results won't match the capper's record.
  • Limits. Small markets like player props can move quickly once lots of followers bet the same thing.

"Tail or fade?" is a common question in betting communities. Tailing means you agree with the pick; to fade means betting against it. Either way, it's worth tracking your own results separately from the capper's, so you know how the picks perform at the prices you actually got.

Examples

  1. Example 1

Scaling a pick. A capper posts "Packers -120 · 2u". Your unit is $25, so you bet $50. If it wins, you profit about $41.67.

  2. Example 2

Missing the number. The same pick moves to -135 before you place it. Your $50 now wins about $37.04 instead of $41.67. Over many picks, those small differences add up.

Common questions

What does tail mean in betting?

It means copying another bettor's or capper's pick, usually at your own stake size.

Why are my results different from the capper I tail?

Usually because of timing and prices. If you bet after the line moves, skip some picks or bet different amounts, your results will drift from theirs.
