Odds boost

Also called: Price boost, Boost

A sportsbook promotion that pays better odds than normal on a specific bet.

An odds boost is a promotion where a sportsbook improves the price on a bet, like a parlay going from +400 to +500.

Some boosts offer real value, especially on straight bet markets. Others boost long-shot parlays that still carry a big margin. Compare the boosted price with the fair odds to know which is which.

Boosts usually have a low maximum stake.

How it works

Odds boosts are one of the most common sportsbook promotions. They usually appear daily, often on popular games, and come with a low maximum stake that varies by sportsbook.

A boost always looks good next to the original price, but that's not the right comparison. What matters is whether the boosted odds are better than the fair odds, the price with the margin removed. Some boosts clear that bar and offer genuine expected value. Many don't, especially boosted long-shot parlay bets, where the original price had a huge margin built in.

A quick way to judge a boost:

  1. Find the fair price for the bet, for example by removing the vig from a sharp market.
  2. Compare it with the boosted odds.
  3. If the boosted odds are longer than the fair odds, the boost has value.

Boosts on single markets like a moneyline are easier to check than boosted parlays, where you'd need to price every leg. Since stakes are capped, boosts won't make a big difference to your results either way, but checking them is a good habit.

Examples

  1. Example 1

A $10 boost from +400 to +500 raises the potential profit from $40 to $50.

  2. Example 2

If that bet's fair chance is 15%, its fair odds are about +567. Even at +500 the boosted bet is still slightly below fair value, with an expected loss of about $1 on a $10 bet.

Common questions

Are odds boosts worth it?

Some are. Compare the boosted price with the fair odds: if the boost is longer than fair, it has value. Many boosted parlays still don't.

Why do odds boosts have a maximum stake?

Sportsbooks cap the stake to limit how much they can lose on a price that's better than normal.
