Opening line

Also called: Opener

The first odds or line a sportsbook posts for a game.

The opening line is where a market starts. It's set with less information and less money behind it than the closing line, so it's usually the least accurate price.

That makes openers attractive to sharp bettors, who try to bet before the market corrects. Limits are often lower when lines first open for exactly that reason.

Comparing the opener with the close shows the full line movement on a game.

How it works

Sportsbooks set openers using power ratings, models and the prices other books have posted. Because little money has been bet yet, the first number is really a starting guess.

That's why limits are usually low when a market first opens. The book wants to see where sharp money goes before taking big bets. Once a few respected bettors have had their say, the line settles and limits rise.

What it means for you:

  • Early bets can beat the close. If your read is right, betting the opener often gives you closing line value.
  • Early bets carry more risk. Injury news and lineup changes haven't come out yet.
  • Compare openers across books. Different sportsbooks often open at different numbers, so line shopping matters most early.

The gap between the opener and the closing line tells you how the market's view changed over the week.

Examples

  1. Example 1

A game opens at Packers -3 (-110). A large bet comes in on the Packers, and within an hour they're -4.

  2. Example 2

A total opens at 47.5. A strong wind forecast arrives mid-week and it closes at 44.5. Anyone who bet the under at 47.5 got 3 points better than the close.

Common questions

When do NFL opening lines come out?

Most sportsbooks post next week's NFL lines on Sunday evening or Monday, with some look-ahead lines available earlier.

Should I always bet the opening line?

No. Openers can be soft, but they also move both ways. Bet early only when you have a clear opinion on the price.
