Variance is the gap between how you expect to do and how you actually do over a stretch. Even a bettor with a real edge will have losing weeks and months.
Over 100 bets, luck alone can easily swing results by 10 units either way. That's why short-term records prove little, and why measures like closing line value are useful.
Good bankroll management is how you survive variance.
How it works
Variance is why betting results can look so different from betting skill in the short run. Each bet is a small random event, and random events cluster.
A bettor with a genuine edge still loses plenty of bets. Over a few hundred bets, those losses can bunch together into a bad month, or wins can bunch into a great one, without anything changing in how they bet.
This has a few practical effects:
- Small samples mislead. A great or terrible month says little about long-term ability.
- Good bettors have losing stretches. Changing strategy after every bad week usually makes things worse.
- Lucky streaks can fool people. Bettors with no real edge can look brilliant for a while.
That's why experienced bettors focus on process over results: getting good prices, tracking closing line value and keeping stakes consistent. A sensible unit size of 1% to 2% of your bankroll is what lets you ride out the normal swings without big damage.
Examples
- Example 1
A bettor who truly wins 54% of bets at -110 expects about +3.1 units over 100 one-unit bets. But there's roughly a 38% chance they'll still be down after those 100 bets.
- Example 2
Even over 1,000 bets, that same 54% bettor has about a 15% chance of being in the red, despite an expected profit of around +31 units.
- Example 3
A bettor with no edge at all, winning 50% at -110, has about a 31% chance of showing a profit after 100 bets, purely from luck.
Common questions
How many bets do you need to know if you're a winning bettor?
There's no exact number, but a few hundred bets is the bare minimum and over a thousand is much better. Closing line value gives a useful signal sooner than results alone.
Is a losing streak just variance?
It can be. Even strong bettors have long losing runs. Check whether you're still getting good prices compared with the closing line before deciding your approach has stopped working.
